How to Make a Good Audio Recording for a YouTube Video

Nothing is as annoying as a video with bad audio. YouTube has proved we can put up with bad video quality, but if the audio is no good we will stop watching. How can you create decent audio on a medium budget?

This article is specifically written for OSX, but most things apply to Windows as well.

Hardware

Many laptops have a build-in microphone. This microphone might be good enough for Skype, but for a youtube movie it is not. If at all possible use an external microphone, even if it is a cheap headphone/microphone combination.

Should you go for a usb-microphone or a microphone with a pre-amp? It depends on your budget. And the amount of hardware you are willing to live with. Having a separate pre-amp and a microphone on a microphone-stand will probably sound better, but it might be more expensive, and it is definitely a lot of stuff to have around the house.

I bought a blue yeti usb-microphone, and am quite pleased with it. By the time I finish typing there will have come out several new microphones so it is hard to recommend anything. When I shopped around I visited a lot of computer hardware stores and the I could not find what I needed. Then I went to a music shop where they sell guitars, drums and audio equipment and their help was excellent. I told my needs (to record my voice), and my budget (<$150), and they showed the possibilities and the costs of each. Shop around, and google everything!

Next, after you acquired your microphone it is time to create your recording setup.

Some microphones are sensitive to touch (like the yeti) and it might be wise to put something soft between the table and the microphone. Also a spit-guard might be a good thing to add. Test and try, it will cost you some time but your listeners will be grateful!

Record in a room that is as quiet as possible, and try doing your recordings really early, the world is asleep and thus is as quite as it gets in your neighborhood. To avoid echo, have something soft behind you, like a curtain.

Recording audio

It is quite possible to record audio and video from the youtube website, but it is best to do everything separately. The easiest way to record audio on the Mac is using piezo, a really simple and nice little program. The only downside it has is that it records in a compressed format. An alternative is using Audacity, which is cross-platform.

To record a Skype conversation you can either use Piezo, or ecamm from Ecam. The podcast mentioned in ‘also see’ has some good info on how to make a high quality audio recording from Skype.

Listen to some test-recordings with (good) headphones. In the beginning your own voice will sound strange, but you’ll get used to it. Pay attention to buzzes (is everything grounded? Are power-cables and audio cables close to each other?) Is there an echo? (add a curtain/ hangup a coat behind you / around you). Again, test and try.

When recording, have frequent break. Drink water. If you made a small mistake, pause, breath, and say the sentence again. All mistakes can be cut away during mixing.

Mixing the audio

This is where thing get tricky. There are two ways to go about this: mix your audio, and place the video so it matches the audio, or, mix your video and use audio markers to make the audio fit. What works best for you is a matter of trying. Easiest is creating one audio-file and then adding video to fit.

On OSX, Garageband is a good and not expensive program to mix your audio. It also has a lot of sound-effects with a reasonable license. A good alternative is Audacity, which is a bit more cumbersome, but it might be even more powerful, and free (cross-platform, works on Windows as well).

When mixing your audio, make sure your voice has room to breath, have breaks between segments. If you add sound-effects, don’t over-do it. Listen to a documentary and a radio-show and you’ll hear the difference how they were mixed-down. Listen to both and then decide what style fits your video. If you put all the effects on a separate audio track you might even make two versions. Ask what your friends think sounds better.

Conclusion

Great sounding videos are fun to watch. We might think that it is all about the video, but your professional voice-over will make all the difference!

How to Create a Virtual Machine Using Oracle’s VM Virtual Box?

Ever had the experience of running more than one operating systems in parallel? Well, that’s something worth experiencing. I remember how I ended up experiencing it at the very first place; there was this mechanical designing software “Autodesk Inventor 10”, my Computer Aided Design (CAD) teacher was using this software for the mechanical simulation and drawing in the class, I was asked thus to design all of my CAD to-be-submitted projects using the same software.

One of the software’s requirements was Microsoft’s 32-bit Windows XP. The operating system that I had been using those days was Microsoft’s 64-bit Windows 7. I googled my problem and found out that it’s not possible to install windows XP with windows 7 in a dual boot system until or unless you do it this way: Install windows XP first and then windows 7. Having invested so much of my time and effort in making sure that my PC is well equipped with the best of educational, recreational, gaming and entertainment software and tools, the prospect of rolling back the existing operating system for Windows XP 32-bit, and then all that for Autodesk Inventor 10, it struck me really hard. I knew even if I set myself to make it happen, it would take me a hell lot of time to restore my PC to the existing state where it takes me no time to get my job done. I knew I would need to reinstall software like MATLAB and AutoCAD, it takes at least 2 hours to install them normally and if any issue pops during installation, half of your day would go ruined getting rid of those issues.

I needed something ideal, something that not only solves my CAD class’s problem but something that also saves me the cost I was being asked for that. I discussed the problem with one of my class mates, one who was well known for being a computer geek and told him all that about not willing to uninstall windows 7. Thanks to him for being so helpful, the perfect solution I was in search of came out to be “Oracle’s VM Virtual Box”, the installation and getting-to-know-it took some time but then it was worth it.

Now that all my problems are solved, I would like to share here a couple of things that helped me and may serve as a one spot solution for anyone who’s interested in creating virtual machine in windows 7, using Oracle’s VMware.

Virtualization software like Oracle’s VMware allows you to create and run multiple operating systems on the same computer at the same time. The software itself could be installed on any operating system you could think of and would allow you to run as much operating systems as you like, if there’s a constraint it’s that of space and memory, nothing else.

Steps-to-take for creating your first virtual machine

Step 1: Once the Virtual Box is installed, type virtualbox in the search panel of the start menu and click on the .exe file that appears as a result, this will open a window known as “VirtualBoxManager” window.

Step 2: Click on the “New” button at the top left corner of the “VirtualBoxManager” window and wait for the wizard to pop up. This wizard will be guiding you through the process of creating a new virtual machine.

Step 3: Give an appropriate name to your virtual machine in the field named “VM name”. Prefer informative names like “Ubuntu” over something like “My VM”.

Step 4: In the “Operating system type” field, select the operating system that you are going to install.

Step 5: Select the memory (RAM) that you want to allocate for your virtual machine. Keep in mind that the host operating system would not be able to use this part of memory while the virtual machine would be running.

Step 6: Next step would be to specify the hard disk space that you want to allocate for your virtual machine.

Step 7: To create a new disk image, in the new window that appears, click the “New” button. This would bring up a “Create New Virtual Disk” window which would help you create a disk image file in the virtual machine’s folder.

Virtual box allows you to create two types of virtual disks.

  1. The dynamically allocated one would be very small initially and would grow to the specified size with time, depending on how much programs are installed and how much data is stored by the guest in the virtual hard disk.
  2. The fixed-size file would not grow with time and would rather, occupy all the specified disk space immediately. The good thing is that since the fixed size file is going to incur less overhead, it’s going to be slightly faster than the dynamically allocated one.

I would recommend you to select here “dynamically allocated file” option.

Step 8: Click “Next”; in the new window that appears, click “Finish” and here you go, your first Virtual Machine has been created.

Steps-to-take for running your first virtual machine

Step 1: In the manager window, you would be able to see a new entry now that you have created your virtual machine, with the name that you had given to it in the “VM name” field. Double click on this entry and click the start button at the top. This will open up a new window showing the boot-up screen.

Step 2: Now that the space and memory for your virtual operating system has been allocated, it’s time to install the guest operating system itself; the virtual machine, as it is now would just behave as a computer with no operating system installed. The “First start wizard” is going to help you through the process of installation of the guest operating system.

Step 3: In the Installation media drop down, select the option that’s most appropriate in your case. I had downloaded the installation medium in the form of a .iso image; so, I just mounted it directly.

Step 4: If your .iso would have been successfully mounted, you would be able to see it in the list with others that would have been used with Virtual Box previously. Once the image file is picked, the installation would just be a Next-Next-I Agree-Next-Finish thing.

How to Assemble a Desktop Computer

A Computer is a device that in a way is a true friend of human beings. Computer lessens out all the work that is burden for us some decades back. A data of thousands and thousands of file can be stored in one system only. It helps us in a way that, say there a thousand files and we have to get a specific data of one of those file of only one page. Searching this page will turn out to be a good challenge. On the other hand, in a computer system you will find no difficulty and the data will be with you within next five minutes. Computer has actually brought speed to a normal man’s life. It have made the work a lot easier like storing documents, connecting with any other person around the world, entertainment, also for studying etc.

The question arises, where is this computer came from? So we know some scientists worked for day and nights for this amazing machine, but people are more interested in knowing. How computers can be assembled? People want to assemble their own computer as per there requirement. We can assemble a good computer in our place itself. Further, it is important to know “How you can assemble a computer”. Computer, conventionally consist of a processing element and some memory. Step by steps we have to follow the instructions and we will find that our computer is ready to rock.

Assembling a desktop Computer is not as hectic task as it sounds. You just have to follow some steps or procedure to make a good blasting computer system. Here are some basic requirements which are needed to assemble a computer system. Firstly you will need a lot of working even space, you must have an anti static wrist wrap, Phillips head screwdriver, needle pliers. Some of the optional requirements as follows: electric tape, a second working computer looking for tips, nylon ties or wires. Keeping the following things in mind you can assemble the well equipped, advance and a real fast computer:

  • Take Inventory

Taking Inventory is all about observing all your parts you’ve gathered for assembling. If you don’t have everything you require don’t start with your task as it leads to a break point. Determination in following every step is must. Say you have every this required but you don’t have a RAM. Your computer cannot even start without it. Every part of a computer system has its own importance and own particular task. So, better not forget even a single step, which leads you to a failure in future.

  • Make Space

Assembling a PC takes some space like a dining table. Also you need is minimum interruption and full concentration. Working on flat table or floor is preferred. Also you have to keep in mind that there should not be dust in the place where you assemble your system. Dust is quite harmful thing for your computer.

  • Prepare for Grounding Protection

If you are working on a bare floor or in case you don’t have a carpet then you can use a wrist strap. Wear this wrist strap correctly is must because it will give you no protection if it is used in wrong way. It provides you with sufficient amount of earth current so that you are safe when you deal with current.

  • Keep the Drivers Ready

Make sure that you have all the latest drivers available with you. See that you have the latest drivers because it helps you a lot during installations. You will find that you can do nothing even after you assembled your system because you need different drivers to make use of what you assembled.

  • Install the Motherboard

This step needs a great care. Take out board from the bag. Take a good look for any visible defect. Now review the manual just to make sure that you know about all the sockets. Usually manual are easy to handle and include good illustrations. Mother board can be termed as the heart of a computer system. Therefore any crack, scratch on its integrated circuit can lead to a failure.

  • Install the Processor

Again a Great care step. No power, proceed with soft hands. Use the lever to open the CPU socket. Carefully lineup the pins and place the processor. Use the lever to lock the processor. If you don’t lineup the pins carefully you might find some of them broken which can cause a great problem in you processor as well as motherboard.

  • Install CPU Heat Sink

It is the fan that cools the processor. It is placed over the processor. You have to attach the clip with a good amount of force.

  • Install RAM

To install RAM you have to insert it into the sockets. Push down RAM firmly till it gets locked. See that you place it carefully then push it down. If you push it without being coordinated with its socket it can show different errors interrupting the working of your machine.

  • To Place Motherboard into The case

Carefully put the motherboard into the case settling down all the sockets at the back of CPU. Screw up the board in the case. Since we discuss before dealing with the mother board needs a lot of care. While doing this you will find yourself very less space to work with in a CPU case. So, it’s better not to apply power handle these with care.

  • Connecting Power Supply

Connect the ATX power connector to the motherboard. Now connect the square processor power connector which has black and yellow wire in it. Also attach the tiny power leads.

  • Connecting Other Hardware

Connect Keyboard, mouse, monitor to their respective color coded sockets or male-female sockets. If you have to connect any external device like printer, scanner etc then do it now.

  • Turn On the PC

Turn on the PC as all the work of assembling is done, install the OS followed by drivers and enjoy your computer.

Use the above tips to assemble a computer without any trouble.

10 Tips to Protect Your PC from Viruses

Computer viruses like their counterparts in human body, replicate themselves through time to the point that no space is left for your data anymore. To make the matters worse, some viruses like “Chernobyl” are known to have the power to destroy the hardware of your computer. In order to prevent such devastating a loss, you need to take preventative measures to prevent your computer from catching virus, malware or Trojan at the very first place. The phrase “Prevention’s better than a cure” seems to make more sense now.

I am going to share 10 tips here that may help you protect your personal computer from viruses before it’s too late.

Tip #1: Keep yourself up-to-date about different kinds of viruses lurking around

Make research and spend some time learning about different viruses; how would you take the preventative measures if you do not know what kind of viruses are lurking around these days?

Tip #2: Install antivirus software and keep it up-to-date

To arm you with the best of antivirus softwares is the first thing to do but it’s not enough. To combat against the hundreds of threats that are produced daily, the virus definitions of the program would have to be updated regularly. Check and make sure that the automatic update option of the software is not turned off.

Tip #3: Run a complete scan at least once a week

Running a scan would slow down your computer for a while; so, set up the schedule in your antivirus software to run the scan late at night or when you are away. The point is, that you should run a scan at least once a week.

Tip #4: Be careful while attaching any storage device to your computer

The most common way the viruses are transferred from one computer to another is through the removable storage devices like USB flash drive. The common misconception is that the virus would not infect the host computer unless the user tries to access the files on that flash drive. Viruses and other malware are auto start programs; they automatically start running as soon as the USB stick is put in to the computer.

Tip #5: Avoid the websites that contain suspicious software downloads

Simply avoid visiting vulgar sites. Vulgar sites are those with illegal software downloads, adult content, obscene material, free cracks and serials. Then there are those foreign sites where everything is written in what seems to be ancient runes; beware of them as well, to be on the safe side.

Tip #6: Perform regular windows updates

Don’t show carelessness in performing regular windows updates and regularly check if your operating system is in need of any. Recent “windows updates history” would let you know what updates have been installed on your computer and would help get rid of unwanted ones. If you can’t manage making regular check yourself, configure and use “automatic updates” feature of the windows.

Tip #7: Be careful while opening e-mails

Do not bother to open the e-mails from unknown senders. Add all the people you know in your address book, this will help a lot in identifying a spam and would save you a lot of trouble. Never download or open attachments unless you have no doubt about them being safe.

Tip #8: Avoid peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing programs

P2P sharing has 100 risks associated with it, counting a few, you may accidentally end up sharing your personal information if extra care is not taken, your downloaded content may bring with it viruses and malware dangerous for your computer, spyware programs like keystroke logger may transmit sensitive and important information about your computer and its usage to a third party. And the list goes on.

The point is while it’s impossible to avoid P2P sharing; preventative measures should be well in place to make sure that you are safe from all the associated risks.

Tip #9: Be careful while downloading files from websites

Do not risk downloading the stuff you are in need of from any site offering free downloads. If you are interested in particular brand’s chipset drivers, Google the name of that brand and download them from that manufacturer’s site.

Tip #10: Enable firewall on your computer

Make sure that your firewall is turned on if you do not want hackers get access to the data on your computer. Firewall can be either hardware based or software based; having both hardware and software based firewall in place is much better than having either of them alone.

You may either use window’s inbuilt firewall or a third party’s solution; anyway, make sure that it’s turned on.

Things to Do When Setting Up a New Computer

When people got their hands over new desktops or laptops, the tendency is to immediately access the internet and do what they want. Computer experts suggest that every person must always be wary once they managed to get new computers. In the field of medicine, the saying “prevention is better than cure” is important. The same saying plays a vital role in the world of computer technology. Preventing a small issue to arise is better than curing a complicated technical issue in the future.

The very moment you got your hands on a new computer, you should follow some precautions to prevent the larger issue to happen in the long run. In order to do so, you need to set up the computer in accordance to these following guidelines.

Backup and Set a Restore Point

Backup and Set a Restore Point

When we say new, it means fresh. The computer is threat-free so to speak. Hence, as long as it is free from any virus or malware, one should use this point to back up everything and create a restore point. Computer users should not rely on the internal hard drive alone when backing up the system; rather, using a separate hard drive such as an external hard drive is more preferable than storing the backup together with system files. By using a separate hard drive for a backup, computer users will never have to worry when things go wrong unexpectedly. Remember that the backup will serve as the last hope when cases gone wrong.

Since you already made a backup, why not use the time to create a restore point? A restore point is similar to a backup; however, it only saves the current status of the computer while leaving all the data within the system. Although a backup is better than the restore point, the backup is not always necessary. System failures are solvable by basic restoration. In other words, a restore point is easy to initialize to fix necessary issues on the computer. If the issue is not solvable by loading the restore point, then, it is time to bring the last hope: the backup. Securing both backup and restore point as early as possible is like investing a life insurance as early as possible.

Install Security Software

Install Security Software

After making a backup and a restore point, it is now time to add a new element to the computer: security. Keep in mind that sooner or later, you will be using this computer to connect to the internet whether you like it or not. Before that situation happens, it is better to assure yourself that you will be safe from the wild horizon of the World Wide Web. Otherwise, you are bringing yourself to danger zones like sheep given to the wolves.

In order not to become food for wolves, computer users should immediately install an anti-virus or an anti-spyware before jumping out into their social network accounts or favorite websites. Always remember, “Prevention is better than cure” is our principle for today. If you do not have an actual installer for these security programs but have access to the internet, then, make the website of security programs your first website to visit. There are a lot of security programs all over the internet and fortunately, manufacturers of computers today usually install security programs in new computers even for a trial period. Make sure you have one!

By securing a backup, restore point, and security programs, you have successfully set-up your new computer. Keep in mind to put all your serial keys on a certain notepad as a digital backup once you need to reinstall them. After doing all these easy steps, you may go now and enjoy the digital world.

Are You Using Your Dropbox Account Cautiously?

Dropbox is an easy to install and use application that helps it’s users to save, edit, and share files, videos, documents etc online with their friends, colleagues, families etc. It was developed and launched in 2007 by two MIT students; surfers took this new concept inot the fold very well; and ever since, its user base has only widened.

Majority of users only think of the application when they want to save and share files, videos, pictures etc. It offers 2 GB of free online storage space to its users, which is not sufficient if you want to use the application seriously but enough to keep your essential files; scanned and saved. Another outstanding feature that sets Dropbox apart from its contemporaries is its compliance with Windows, Mac, Linux, irrespective of whether you are accessing it on your desktop, laptop, and notebook; add Android, iPhone and iPad, and BlackBerry to it as the tool works on them too.

However if you learn to use Dropbox services properly and get familiar with all the settings that it provides, you will be able to do a lot more than just syncing your files and images. Dropbox has managed to add some awesome applications by way of third party services that almost sound as if they are part and parcel of Dropbox application. For more on what else can Dropbox account do for you, read here: Different Uses of Dropbox Public Folder that You Did Not Know

Once you get familiar with these features and set your account in tune with them, Dropbox can help you carry your music wherever you go, create a photo gallery; or even create a website using their application.

The latest feature that the Dropbox tool has added for the convenience of its users is that the minute you edit or update your photo, video, file, document etc on your iphone, laptop etc; that document in the Dropbox account automatically gets updated/edited/replaced whatever be the case and the new version starts showing. This means you don’t have to spend extra time sending a communication to the recipient that the updated version of file has to be referred to; because updated and revised version is what he will get to see when he opens the document. Dropbox refreshes docs on its own, so much so that you don’t even have to press the refresh button! This feature has simplified life for everyone.

Few weeks ago the Dropbox application got hit by hackers; as a result of this software failure many users noticed and complaint that their accounts were lying open and unsafe for a few hours and everybody and anybody could access and misuse the information saved in their account. The superefficient Dropbox team got on the job, investigated and fixed the matter and did stay in touch with users whose accounts were vulnerable.

As a result of the above faux pas, the technical team at Dropbox has developed and launched a 2 step security verification code system to protect their users from such future mishaps in future; an initiative that has been much appreciated by the user community.

The 2 step security includes the regular username password stage; and for getting through the second stage you have to make a choice between receiving a six digit code on your cell phone or you can also download Authenticator application that will help you to generate codes locally on the phone itself that you are supposed to use within a limited time frame after which they will expire and you will need to request fresh codes. Users have to enable this new setting on their accounts to take advantage of this extra protection feature.

If you are someone who uses Dropbox account from tablets and cell phones, you should unlink the application from old setting and link once again so that it becomes verification code enabled on these machines too and chances of anybody else accessing your account are minimized. Also, after you do this, every time someone tries to access your account from a new device you will get an email notification to this effect.

Remember, using Dropbox haphazardly or without proper knowledge can have its own pitfalls. So be careful on that front. However as an avid lover and user of Dropbox I must confess it’s an absolutely unmatched and wonderful application!

Different Uses of Dropbox Public Folder that You Did Not Know

Dropbox is increasingly becoming more and more popular amongst its users and proving to be a tool of much use. Synchronizing files is amongst its most basic functions which we did not even consider while we were contemplating developing an article on various uses of this tool called the Dropbox. In this article we are going to talk about things people do with their Dropbox application.

Opening a Dropbox account is an extremely simple procedure; after which the user is supposed to download the application on his computer. Then download or transfer files, photographs, music, videos and whatever else he wants and save them in an organized fashion by creating various relevant folders for it. This procedure should be repeated on each machine where you are likely to open and work with your Dropbox account.

When you edit a file or video on one machine; the application is designed in such a way that the revised version starts showing automatically without user having to press the refresh button on every machine that you are likely to use Dropbox from. At the same time if you want to refer to the old file or version of document Dropbox retains that too so referring to older version is possible.

Many people have the habit of saving projects/communications they are working on desktop, get into a habit of saving them in Dropbox public folder instead.

If your office has branches in many locations or you travel frequently on business then it is most advisable to keep list of important documents handy in your Dropbox public folder.

Dropbox Public Folder

Important documents like scanned copies of resume, utility bills, address proof, Identification Proof etc should be stored in Dorpbox account to make them handy; also your contact list data be transferred from your machine to Dropbox folder and create representative link where it was originally placed to the Dropbox location.

Some people also create a folder in Dropbox to keep a record of home inventory, assets, jewellery etc that they own and buy during the year. You can also keep text file of your grocery list in the folder, ensuring that it can be accessed on your Smartphone etc.

The user should familiarise himself with various third party utility applications to protect their folders; save music, videos, and generate and remember passwords.

There are utility applications available for Programmers and web Developers too which help them to take work home with much ease; or which help them to store local files while working on live servers. When you will do the latter your recently revised files will be saved on all your machines.

Use your Dropbox account to store your iWeb domain files.

Some people prefer to store all their plain-text notes in their Dropbox folder because there are many text editors which are Dropbox compatible; and these documents can be edited online easily.

Dropbox application also helps you to sync your browser profiles and bookmarks. However if you do not want to do it for some reason then the alternative you are left with is that you sync .webloc files by linking to particular sites. Likewise some people using ichats are very happy to sync instant-messaging transcripts into their Dropbox folder.

People who need to sync files from iWork Suite on iPad will be required to set up Drop DAV account for dropboxing. If you know how to use the application you can even sync files in Android phones.

Just like one file can be used at many places, it can similarly be used by many people. People outsourcing work can save the work in dropbox folder send link to the person they have hired for work and once work is complete you can close or disable the access for the link.

To send heavy files to non-Dropbox-users use airdropper.com to send and receive files.

There are also certain complaints or problem areas related to syncing files in Dropbox account, like when iTunes xml file, iPhones, and Quickens data files are synced and when the software is trying to look for conflicted copies of its data files, Dropbox sometimes does get confused.

Whichever applications that you might be syncing via Dropbox, be careful that you close those files when you’re finished with your current editing. By doing this, chances of your leaving a file open will reduce because when you don’t close the file and create another one, it creates conflict when you open it from another machine.

Another “don’t” includes, to avoid putting all your folders in the Dropbox; it is hardly a good or practical idea; instead identify the most important and frequently needed documents and images, and set them up in image and document folders. If you wish to save music and video folders the free space provided by Dropbox to free users is not sufficient, you will be required to increase your GB space by becoming a paid/premium member and only then you can exercise this choice.

Besides the above there are many other ways in which people across the world use Dropbox account to suit their convenience. If you are a Dropbox application user and want to share your secrets regarding the uses of dropbox account, you are most welcome to share them with us and our readers here.

And you can’t deny the fact that if enough care is not in place, you may easily lose all what you have spent over it. Learning from the bad experiences, well they are all around us, would really help. Instead of repeating the same mistakes and wasting your time googling “what should I do now?”, “what’s the solution to this problem?” this and that, which is not going to work, let’s copy these tips down somewhere and put them in effect before we have our own bad experience to share.

Tip#1: Invest some bucks on a screen protector, that’s really worth it

Compare the costs to be paid: 20$ screen protector vs. what you would have to spend buying a new e-Reader if your carelessness takes its toll.

With the screen protector over it, if your device falls accidentally, worse that’s going to happen is that you would need to replace the old casing with a new one.

Tip#2: Use “Calibre”, it’s free

Calibre has all what you need for management of your e-books. Among some features that I know of that make this program a must-for-every-e-book-reader are: it can keep the lists of your to-be-purchased, to-be-read e-books; it can arrange your e-books by author, title, series, publisher and your personal rankings; it can help you keep track of the purchases you have made saving you the time and money you may spend otherwise in buying the book again.

Tip#3: Make the most of freebies

Freebies don’t cost you anything then why thinking twice before giving a try to something different. While downloading a freebie, don’t think whether it’s going to match your interest or not, just download it! Give it a try! If it works for you, fine! If not, you can always delete it.

Tip#4: Try sample before buying any book

Samples are free. Some publishers will have no problem sharing whole chapter of the book as a sample giving the reader a chance to check himself whether this is the kind of book he is going to like or not. This is not a freebie! If you don’t want to end up with something you are going to regret later, you would need to think twice before making the purchase; download samples, read them and then make your choice.

Tip#5: Get an extra charger

An extra USB charger’s not going to cost you more than $5. There would be nothing worse than your access being blocked to your e-book library just because your e-Reader has run out of charge and the only charger you had is left at home.

Tip#6: Know the difference between the copyrighted and non-copyrighted

Most of the books that enter the public domain are either those whose copyright has expired or those government documents that are not copyrightable. The copyrighted material cannot go online without the permission of the author.

Project Gutenberg (http://www.gutenberg.org/) is one of those voluntarily digitizing the material whose copyright has expired making it easier for the public to access them. No fee or registration is required to download e-books from Gutenberg’s to your e-Reader.

Tip#7: Backup your e-books

It may happen that you buy an e-book and end up deleting it accidentally just to know that it cannot be re-downloaded. Hurry up! Make back-up of all your e-books before it’s too late.

Make back-ups and make it your habit to update them every few days. Dropbox, Sugarsink, Mozy and many other such online backup services will let you store as much as 2 GB of data as a free user (that’s more than enough for an e-book reader) and will allow you access them from wherever you are.

Spilled Coffee on Laptop Keyboard? Let’s Fix It

Your laptop can be very important to you. Something that you have never had, you don’t care about it but something that you have been using for a while can be so important to you and you are so dependent on it.

Laptop is one of these things. You have a lot of the information, documents, files, videos, photos, articles, and many many different things in your laptop. You don’t dare to imagine that it stops working suddenly.

Spilled Coffee on Laptop KeyboardIf your laptop stops working, you can be in a big problem. It can happen to all of us that something like the water, coffee, soda, wine and… . becomes spilled on the laptop. We have to know what to do then.

If this happens to you and you act immediately you may be able to save a lot of money that you would have to pay to fix the laptop or recover the data from the hard disk.

If after the spill you don’t see any smoke or didn’t hear any noise, you are lucky and it is highly possible that you can fix the computer by yourself without having to pay any money. You should act immediately and do all the below things:

1. If the laptop is still on try to shut it down immediately without any movement.

2. Take a bunch of tissue papers and remove all the remaining liquid.

3. Unplug everything which is connected to the laptop and then try to remove the battery. You need someone to help you to do that because you should not tilt the laptop when removing the battery. So ask someone to lift the laptop and then remove the battery.

If the spilled liquid is water you are lucky because you can easily leave the laptop under a  fan for a couple of days and let the water to become dried.

Just make sure that the water is completely dried and then turn on the laptop and see if it works or not.

If the spilled liquid is not water, then you would have to open up the laptop and clean the internal parts. In this case the best thing is referring to the laptop manufacturer websites and looking for the instructions. Most of the laptop manufacturers have complete instruction and videos for opening the computers and laptops.

It is not that hard to open up a laptop case. You just need a screwdriver. After opening up the case you have to remove all the components one by one, clean them and put them back: hard drive, RAM, LAN cards, CD and DVD drives.

Possibility the keyboard will never work properly after you spill a liquid on it but don’t worry. The keyboard is the cheapest part to replace.

You have to clean each and every one of the keyboard keys and also all of the other components with alcohol and make sure that everything is dried completely before reassembly.

Something that you have to keep in your mind about the laptops is that you have to backup your data regularly. Do not trust a laptop hard memory and do not keep your important information on it. If your laptop has a CD or DVD writer, then backup your data every week on a CD or DVD. If your laptop doesn’t have a CD or DVD writer, then it is recommended to buy an external DVD writer.
